Applications are open for the Africa Clean Air Network (AfriCAN) / Health Effects Institute (HEI) Future Leaders Fellowship 2026. The program is a part-time, virtual fellowship for graduate students, providing an opportunity for early-career researchers across Africa to strengthen their skills in air pollution and environmental health research, and broaden their network. Three to four prospective fellows will be supported for 6 months (Sept. 2026 – March 2027), paired with a mentor at an academic or research institution in Africa.

Research focus areas include assessment of long-term air-quality trends in African cities, analysis of public perception of air pollution using news and social media, assessment of emissions inventories for key air-pollution sources in Africa, a rapid literature review on air pollution and heat in Africa, and mapping/assessment of air-quality monitoring across Africa.

Benefits: $1,800 stipend paid directly to the fellow, plus travel support to attend the Africa Clean Air Forum 2027. Final outcomes are shared in a public webinar and may include peer-reviewed publications, blogs, or policy briefs.

Eligibility: Applicants must be enrolled in a Masters or PhD program at a university/institution based in Africa, with current research interests in one of the listed topics. Masters applicants must have completed at least one full year of their program at the start of the fellowship. Not open to postdoctoral researchers or faculty.

Deadline: June 12, 2026, 11:59 GMT.
